Project #41 | Maternity Ward and Maternal Health Care in Mali
Our partnership with Mali Health
One Day’s Wages’ second partnership with Mali Health funded a maternity ward and basic laboratory for one of the poorest areas of Bamako. In Bamako, a city that is growing at a rate of 4.5% a year, a large peri-urban population lacks access to essential needs and services.
The funds raised through the matching grant were used to construct and equip the maternity ward. The facility supports pre and post-natal care efforts, family planning, and semi-private post-delivery space, in addition to aiding in the actual deliveries. Ultimately, these facilities help to ensure that proper precautions and aftercare are provided for all patients, helping to diminish and eradicate all preventable deaths.

Meet Safiatou
Safiatou lives in Sikoro with her husband, but often visits her mother inlaw who lives in a village not too far from Bamako. After she became pregnant, she and her husband left Sikoro and migrated to the village, where her husband took a new job. Towards the end of her pregnancy, Safiatou began to have difficulties, including abdominal pain. She discussed it with her husband who decided they should return to Sikoro for her to give birth, especially since this was her first pregnancy. They knew the CSCOM well because they lived very close to it and had heard that a new maternity ward had just been constructed. Safiatou gave birth at CSCOMSiSou maternity ward the day after she returned from the village and just hours before the official inauguration of the center. Baby Diakité, a healthy baby girl, was the first baby born at the maternity ward.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our maternal care fund.
