ODW + PARTNERS RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT
Project #295 | Rohingya Education Project
Our partnership with Partners Relief & Development
The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic minority group that has lived for centuries in Myanmar, but has experienced decades of violence, discrimination, and persecution. Rohingya people have been denied citizenship since 1982, making them the world’s largest stateless population. After a massive wave of violence broke out in Myanmar’s Rakhine State in 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingya, half of whom were children, sought refuge in Bangladesh. Many villages were burned to the ground, and thousands of families were killed or separated from one another. The city of Cox’s Bazar on Bangladesh’s southeast coast is now home to nearly one million displaced Rohingya. For Rohingya children who remain in Myanmar, access to education is limited. Rohingya students are required to study in separate schools, and Rohingya teachers do not have access to proper training.
One Day’s Wages partnered with Partners Relief & Development to ensure displaced and marginalized Rohingya students receive a high quality education. Our partnership supported community schools for Rohingya students in Sittwe, Myanmar, and in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Students received textbooks and stationary for the school year so that they had the tools and resources they needed to learn. Primary students in Cox’s Bazar also received school uniforms and bags, along with vitamins and hygiene supplies to supplement the limited resources available in the refugee camps. Among the young adult students, 100% passed their final exams and advanced to the next level. Despite significant barriers, the value of education was reinforced and young people were inspired to become agents of change within their communities.

Meet Shayhayna
Shayhayna, 15 years old, is originally from Rakhine State, Myanmar. Her family fled to Bangladesh in 2017 due to the genocide against the Rohingya. She was only eight at the time and studying in grade one: “I remember how our lives changed overnight. We had to leave behind our home, my school, and everything to escape the violence”.
Shayhayna now lives in a refugee camp in Bangladesh with her father, mother, older sister, and younger brother. She shares about her experience of displacement, and the hope she finds in her education:
“Life in the camp is challenging, especially for girls. It’s overcrowded, and I feel unsafe. Even though I’m grateful we escaped the violence, I still miss our home in Myanmar every day.
For years, I wanted to return to school but couldn’t find the opportunity. I missed learning and felt left behind. Then, in May 2024, I joined the women’s education center supported by Partners. It was like a dream come true. Now, I can study again, learning to read and write in Burmese, and I’m also practicing basic math skills. The center has been a place of hope for me, somewhere I can focus on my future and not just survival. Our teachers are wonderful; they don’t just follow the curriculum. They also share meaningful stories that teach us about the world and values beyond what’s in our books. I feel so inspired listening to them, and I look forward to every class. My favorite moments are when the teachers tell stories about kindness and the importance of helping others.
Attending this center has brought joy back into my life. I am determined to keep studying until I complete the final term. I dream of continuing my education and making a difference, both for myself and for those around me. Education is a precious gift, and I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to learn again.”
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?
