ODW + JUSTICE RISING
Project #277 | Education Support for Students Displaced by Conflict
Our Partnership with Justice Rising
In June 2022, a surge of violent conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) displaced roughly 100,000 people. An estimated 1,000 families relocated to an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Kihisi, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. Among those who have been displaced, access to food and water is scarce, healthcare is severely limited, families are living in small tents, and there are no opportunities for children to continue their education.
ODW partnered with Justice Rising to support school-age children in Goma experiencing trauma and displacement. With this support, 92 of the most vulnerable children living in the Kihisi IDP camp were able to enroll at the Justice Rising school in Kihisi: Main Dans La Main Primaire. Justice Rising integrated these students into the school by hiring and training teachers from the IDP camp. Students received school supplies and uniforms, and their families were given a small monthly stipend to purchase basic food and medicines. Through our partnership, students and their families gained education, counseling and relief supplies during a time of crisis.

Meet Patrick*
We abandoned everything in our home. When we arrived in Goma, we tried to look for a job but we couldn’t find one. We wondered how we could find our children’s uniforms, shoes, and notebooks in a situation where we don’t even have anything to eat.
When we saw Justice Rising register our kids at school, this started to bring hope. And when we saw our kids in the clean uniforms they were given, I said “Praise God! Apparently something is going well here”. What really touched us was to see that Justice Rising knew children could not study with an empty stomach or they would not be able to follow lessons. The initiative of small income-generating activities like selling potatoes helps us to earn money to meet our children’s needs such as food and clothing.
Even if it’s still small, it’s already a step forward and we are thankful. This project has been a blessing and a real response to our needs.

Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
