ODW + EMPOWER TANZANIA
Project #265 | Same Learning Center for Underserved Students
Our Partnership with Empower Tanzania
Tanzania has a young population. Half of its 54 million citizens are children. It is estimated that up to 71% of children in Tanzania suffer two or more instances of severe deprivations of basic needs. These challenges are complex and interrelated, and include poverty, poor health, neglect and abuse. There is an urgent need to support vulnerable children and families so that they have access to adequate nutrition and education.
One Day’s Wages partnered with Empower Tanzania so that 50 vulnerable children in Same Town gained academic and nutritional resources at the Same Learning Center. Students met at the learning center after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays to improve their English and Swahili reading skills so they can excel in school. On Saturdays, students also received additional tutoring and nutritious meals, and participated in daily life skills instruction such as animal husbandry, games, gardening, and social skills. Each child received a school uniform, shoes, notebooks, pens, and hygiene materials. Among the 23 students who graduated from the program this year, 100% were successfully able to enter secondary school!

Meet Sauda
Like many girls in Same town, Sauda did not enjoy going to school because she thought it was pointless for a girl to get an education. She did not understand why she needed an education, and she was embarrassed that her family didn’t have as many resources as some of her peers. Her father was not in the picture, and her mother was doing her best to single-handedly care for the family.
Given her family’s situation, Sauda was invited to join Empower Tanzania’s after school program. Now 14 years old, Sauda shares:
“After joining Same Learning Center my thoughts have completely changed. I have learned the importance of education for a child. The teachers have taught me about my rights and how to be confident when I am in any situation. Mostly I get my school needs met, like new school uniform, and I eat at the school like other students from able families, something that my mother was unable to fulfill in time. I found myself liking going to school and ready to get an education. All this is because Empower Tanzania sees the important of helping us.”
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
