PROJECT #236
Project #236 | Middle School Scholarships for Girls in Niger
Our partnership with Remember Niger Coalition
Niger consistently ranks among the poorest and least developed nations in the world. There are significant financial and cultural barriers to accessing education for girls in Niger, especially middle school education. Overall in Niger, only 35% of women are literate. Less than 25% of girls, 15-24 years old are literate (UNICEF). In addition to creating access to education for girls, Remember Niger works with its partners to keep girls in school to reduce school dropout rates and early marriage. Once enrolled in Remember Niger’s Girls Scholarship Program, funding will provide for school fees, books, uniforms, meals, and tutoring/mentoring.
One Day’s Wages partnered with Remember Niger Coalition to provide scholarships to girls to attend middle school in cities and villages throughout the country. Remember Niger’s Girls’ Scholarship Program provides critical access to education to girls in Niger in order to move them out of poverty and oppression. The program creates opportunities that encourage girls to enroll in schools while also demonstrating the value of girls’ education to their parents and communities.

Meet Nadia
Nadia is fifteen years old and was forced to leave middle school when she became acutely ill with kidney disease. She had to stay in the hospital for several months. When she tried to return to school the director explained that she was no longer enrolled because she had missed too many days of class. Instead of being given the opportunity to repeat the school year, she was told that her education career was over. Like many other girls in Niger, Nadia was denied the opportunity to stay in school and realize her vision for her life. She wants to become a doctor so that she can treat children in her community who need help. When we met with her father, he agreed that she is very intelligent and belonged in school. Unfortunately, he did not have the financial means to make that happen. Nadia was offered a Remember Niger scholarship to attend a different school this past year. Her father is thrilled that his daughter has this opportunity and Nadia is thriving and moving toward her dream of becoming a doctor and helping her community.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to the fund below.
