PROJECT #233

Project #233 | Community Resource Center for Children & Families in Kenya

Our Partnership with Mwanzo

In Rabuor, Kenya, parents of young children expressed need for a school that can bring transformation to their community; however, resources were insufficient. The community reached out to Mwanzo’s Founder and Executive Director Loyce Ong’Udi, who was born and raised in Rabuor. In response, Mwanzo designed the Mwanzo Wetu Center of Excellence Academy (MWCEA), which offers not only a school but also a hub for information and innovation.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Mwanzo and the community of Rabuor to build the foundation and ground floor of a two-story community resource building. This section of the center now houses the youngest class of Mwanzo’s early childhood development program, a health services room, and a computer lab with internet, fax, and copy services. Right from the start, 60 children were actively learning in their new classroom, and another 110 MWCEA students gained access to the new computer lab!

Meet Molly

“My name is Molly and I am a school teacher at MWECA. Soon after marrying, my husband (who is a contractor) and I moved to Rabuor. He heard of the construction of Mwanzo Education Center and was hired to help build the new school. As a result, I was also hired as a teacher in January 2017. It was my happiness and continues to be, for a chance to develop my career and also nurture the young ones, some of them orphans. I can relate and empathize with their position since I was orphaned at a very young age. I am also appreciative that the students, though they have many personal challenges, are in an institution with teachers and staff who share similar experiences and therefore support the little ones from a place of understanding. Since I joined the school, I have great peace of mind through my stable salary. Mwanzo also supports teachers through continuing education which has helped me to pursue my diploma course in education. I am proud to be a teacher and a parent in this great institution.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our children’s education fund.
