PROJECT #188
Project #188 | Strengthening Mothers and Protecting Children in Zambia
Our partnership with Alliance for Children Everywhere
In 2019, Zambia experienced its worst drought in over forty years. Already ranked the fifth hungriest country in the world, Zambia experienced collapsed crops, plummeting wages, and doubled food prices that brought over two million people to the brink of starvation. With the COVID-19 global pandemic deepening this crisis, One Day’s Wages partnered with Alliance for Children Everywhere (ACE) to protect young children in crisis by economically empowering their mothers. Empowerment efforts began with distribution of food relief to address hunger, but relief alone is a short-term solution. Strengthening mothers frees families from cycles of poverty and preserves families long-term. This partnership supported a vital component of ACE’s Family Preservation and Empowerment Program (FPEP), which aims to prepare Zambian mothers for life and small business ownership after graduation. FPEP gives mothers of young children access to monthly food relief, job skills training, and community savings groups in order to protect lives, preserve families, and strengthen communities.

Meet Idah and her Grandson
Idah lives with her daughter and five grandchildren in Zambia. Her daughter worked long, grueling hours to provide, but while she lost time with the kids, it still did not bring enough income for the family. Then, Idah joined the Family Preservation and Empowerment Program (FPEP). There, she gained access to training in various small business skills and joined a savings group to support longterm change, while at the same time she received food packages to meet the family’s immediate needs. Following her experience in the program, Idah felt empowered, saying she planned to begin saving up to create her own peanut butter business. Without the provision of food supplements, families in this region were at risk of starvation due to lack food access. The FPEP was thankfully able to provide Idah’s family and many others with nutritious food while working toward longterm change.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our jobs & skills fund.
