PROJECT #202

Project #202 | Empowering Students in Conflict Zones During COVID-19

Our partnership with Justice Rising

Having a safe space to learn and grow is critical for children in their developmental years, but for children living in war zones it is often disrupted. Justice Rising specializes in building schools and supporting education in war zones, mitigating conflict through the power of education. During the the spread of COVID-19, schools around the world were required to shut down, disrupting child education and development through a different kind of crisis. As schools began closing, Justice Rising utilized their expertise in supporting education during societal crises and began to mobilize over 100 of their teachers to respond in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They responded in two major ways: to ensure minimal regression in students’ learning they distributed distance-learning workbooks. To do this, Teachers were supplied with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), to protect and prevent spread of the virus: hand sanitizer, face masks, and face shields. Second, they disseminated basic public health messaging through radio messages to reinforce the best practices for water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Meet the Teachers

In response to schools closing due to COVID-19, the teachers of Justice Rising came together to ensure that their students could still exercise their right to education. The teachers began by creating and distributing at home workbooks. In the featured picture, we see a few teachers preparing workbooks for distribution to their students. In addition, teachers carried out in person tutoring sessions which helped mitigate digressions in learning during school closures. The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was required for staff during these visits, an essential aspect of this project.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our emergency relief fund.
