PROJECT #193
Project #193 | Strengthening Support for Survivors of Violence
Our partnership with Freely in Hope
School closures and shelter-at-home mandates left standing impacts on the incidences of sexual violence worldwide. In addition to the increase of sexual violence, the mental health of scholars was at risk due to isolation. Freely in Hope responded to the socioeconomic impact by being attentive to the needs of their community and pursuing the mission of ending sexual violence in all the ways they can. In both Kenya and Zambia, Freely in Hope successfully strengthened support in the following ways: Caring for their staff, Provision of food for families of scholars, strengthening of the academic support system
One Day’s Wages partnership with Freely in Hope to supported 27 survivors and 14 staff members directly in their programming. Freely in Hope understands that their scholars are facing higher amounts of stress hormone which could be due, but not limited to, isolation, fears, uncertainties, home environment, living situation, and keeping up with their academic course work. Freely in Hope and One Day’s Wages partnered together to provide emergency relief resources for the staff, students, and their families. These included delivering food baskets to the families of scholars as well as towards their academic support which allowed for stadd to provide tutoring, learning materials, safe housing, counseling, and meals to their scholars.

Meet Lweendo*
A freely in Hope Scholar who is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with an intended graduation date of 2023 shared with us the impact that our partnership had on her health and education.
“I received great grades from my first semester this year! Thanks to the nonstop support of the Freely in Hope family. They ensured that I had a healthy environment for learning and helped me pay my school fees. My family members gave me the time I needed to concentrate on my studies, and I was extremely committed.”
Lweendo* also reported back on her experience with mental health and bravely shared her story with us
“I am reaching milestones in my journey of healing. Through sessions with our counselor, I managed to find courage and share my story for the first time, which is a huge achievement in my life. I felt renewed, relieved, and lighter; it was as if a heavy load was lifted off of me. Above all, I was proud of myself for this step towards healing, and for believing in myself. I thank God that I am physically well during this global pandemic, despite triggers. As we strive to bring the best out of ourselves, we should also take care of ourselves. Self care is so important. I am grateful that my family members are so mindful and concerned about my well being and success in my studies. They have been there to support me in so many ways”

Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our emergency relief fund.
