PROJECT #120

Project #120 | Alleviating Hunger in Syria

Our partnership with World Renew

The humanitarian crisis resulting from the Syrian Civil War is considered to be one of the worst crises in modern history. It is estimated that there are currently more than 6.3 million internally displaced persons in Syria, many in need of immediate relief.

Amongst the war and refugee crisis, it is important to note the immense food insecurity issues in Syria at this time. With 69% of the population living in extreme poverty (double the pre-crisis level), many families cannot afford the skyrocketing costs of food. An estimated 80% of households have reported being unable to provide food for themselves and their families.

We partnered with World Renew to address the immediate food insecurity of internally displaced persons in this region. This project sought to stabilize household access to food consumption through assistance to vulnerable Syrian families, ultimately saving lives and maintaining human dignity in the communities experiencing food insecurity. Our partnership provided 300 households with food rations for six months in 3 locations throughout Syria. Their food consumption is now stable, high in nutritional content, and they are now connected to a local support system.

Meet Farrah

Farrah is a mother of two children who lived in Aleppo until her family was forced to flee due to violence. “We stayed for two years in Aleppo but it got to the point where our children kind of lost their minds because of everything they went through. We weren’t able to get much food or bread because there were a lot of snipers in the neighborhood.” One night, bombs fell on her home and her husband didn’t survive. With her children, Farrah was forced to flee to and navigate an unfamiliar world with almost nothing. Even the essentials, like food, were hard to come by. Farrah’s 11 and 13 year olds were forced to work so that they could afford to pay rent and buy food. After finding a new community, Farrah’s neighbor connected her to World Renew’s local partner, who is providing this family with baskets of food. Today, her children no longer have to work and they have hope for a future free from hunger and war.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our refugee relief fund.
