PROJECT #98

Project #98 | Empowering Families in Uganda

Our partnership with Abide Family Center

Our partnership with Abide Family Center supported four business courses that taught a total of 43 women how to start and run a small business. After the classes each woman worked one-on-one with a business instructor to make a feasible business plan. The business plan was then approved by a team consisting of a business instructor, social worker, nurse, and counselor. A home visit is then completed and a grant is given to the woman in the form of physical supplies she will need to make the business run. Abide’s business instructors visit each business every 3 months in the first year and again on the 2 year mark to give graduates the support and care needed to make the business successful and sustainable. This enables women to establish secure sources of income to support their families and prevents resorting to the painful alternative of placing their children in an orphanage.

Meet Annet

Annet, 33 years old, was referred to Abide by a local orphanage after she had sought to place her 6 children in their care until she could find a job and support them financially. Because of the potential the orphanage saw in Annet, they referred her to Abide to provide income generation support, formula and counseling. She was admitted into the program and went through our business training, graduated and started a small business. Currently she is selling second hand clothes. Her business is moving on well, she is able to save with a local saving group because this is taught in the business classes. Out of her profits, she has started farming and grows tomatoes for commercial purposes. By reinvesting her profits from the tomatoes into both her farming and clothing business, she was able to expand both of her operations. Annet was once living in a leaking house with one room but because of her business she has moved into a safe house and is currently paying school fees for her children, thus positively impacting the community.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our jobs & skills fund.
