PROJECT #82
Project #82 | Fighting Malnutrition in Nicaragua
Our partnership with Clinica Verde
In 2007, Clinica Verde opened a health clinic in rural Nicaragua and found that many health problems could be prevented or treated through improved nutrition. In response, Clinica Verde produced a community garden that was able to feed its patients and employees on a daily basis.
Our partnership with Clinica Verde allowed for the expansion of the garden’s harvest to benefit school programs and enabled the local community to begin their own gardens. By replicating a successful model of biointensive, organic gardening, more families in the community were able to learn about and participate in establishing food security. The garden will continue to serve as an educational and training garden for students to learn about sustainable, organic agriculture methods to promote balanced diets. This project also provides skills training, cooking classes, a seed bank, and a greenhouse for the community.

Meet Juan
Juan was part of the first group of students from Public Institute of Boaco and was a member of our first series of workshops on bio-intensive gardening and good nutrition. Juan applied his acquired knowledge and began to build a bio-intensive garden at home, with a lot of effort and dedication he built 5 beds of double digging. He has always voluntarily come to support the demonstration garden of Clinica Verde, showing a great attitude and impressive learning capability. Currently Juan continues to support much of the garden at his school and the garden of Clinica Verde, and has become a leader for other students who work with him in the garden. He helps organize work groups and directs the activities in the garden; because of this he has become a big support for teachers in assisting them with Technical Vocational Guidance. At Clinica Verde when groups of visiting students are very large, he is a leader and coordinator of our program, thanks to the motivation and knowledge he has acquired.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our global hunger fund.
