PROJECT #126
Project #126 | Scholarship Program in Vietnam
Our partnership with PeaceTrees
In Quang Tri province, Vietnam, it costs a minimum of $50 to send a child to school each year. Many of the families living in this province, especially in the ethnic minority communities, fall within the bottom 40% of the income bracket in Vietnam. In addition, when a child or a family member is injured in a mine accident, it is extremely difficult for families to recover economically and afford schooling. The barrier of $50 to attend school often means that a child will not receive any formal education.
Our partnership with PeaceTrees Vietnam supported educational opportunities for children in central Vietnam in communities living with the legacy of war through the provision of scholarships, enabling children to to remain in school and continue their educations. These scholarships covered full tuition, uniforms, books, meals, and additional administrative fees that families would otherwise be unable to pay. Access to education is a proven poverty reduction measure as it enables children to learn important skills and develop more economic security for their futures.

Meet Kim
Kim survived an unexploded ordnance accident in 2002 while farming. At the time of the accident he was 18 years old and he sustained serious injuries and lost both hands in the explosion. After the accident he struggled—he was confused and questioned why this accident had occurred. PeaceTrees was able to assist with Kim’s medical needs, and helped him settle back into life at home by providing him with cows to ensure economic sustainability and food security for his family. PeaceTrees also helped Kim modify his house in order to make it accessible in light of his injury. Today, after many years of hard work, Kim is a proud husband, a father of 3 wonderful daughters and a breadwinner with a contagious smile. He plays sports and has a positive outlook on life. In the years since his accident, PeaceTrees has accompanied Kim on a journey in which he has overcome many challenges, providing scholarships to his children, supplying the family with livestock, and helping Kim and his wife open a small store in their home to provide additional financial stability for the family.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our children’s education fund.
