PROJECT #123

Project #123 | Maternal Health in Haiti

Our partnership with Heartline

The mission of Heartline Ministries is to strengthen Haitian families and prevent children from becoming orphans through initiatives that empower Haitians with maternal and infant health care, education, vocational training, economic development, and Christian outreach. This partnership funded the HMC’s holistic maternal and infant care model that is highly unique not only in Port au Prince, but also across the country due to the following program features: weekly prenatal care and education programs, breastfeeding support, extensive postpartum care, medical screening, and free family planning. Through this partnership, vulnerable and financially poor Haitian women were able to receive increased quality healthcare for their families and throughout their pregnancies.

Meet Vitani and Chrisnie

At the age of 42, Vitani takes four tap-taps to get to her job as a cook for a preschool, a trip that can take anywhere from 90 minutes to 4 hours each way. As the main provider, Vitani works hard every day to earn enough money to support her family, including her 15-year-old son. After years of waiting, and experiencing the painful loss of miscarriage, Vitani arrived at the Heartline Maternity Center. The midwives confirmed that she was 8 weeks pregnant, and she was admitted into the prenatal program. As Vitani neared her mid-May due date, she was happy and nervous. When she arrived at the Maternity Center, Haitian midwife Mica grabbed supplies and ran outside just in time to deliver Vitani’s baby girl in the back of the vehicle! Baby Chrisnie let out her first cry and the fullness of relief and joy washed over Vitani’s face. Over the next few days, mom and baby enjoyed precious bonding time in the MC postpartum wing. The steady stream of visitors made it easy to see that Vitani is a cherished member of the maternal care center, with so many other moms stopping by to share their congratulations and meet her sweet girl. After returning home to a crowd of excited family members, Vitani and Chrisnie returned to the maternal care center each week for the next six months for community, child development class, and check-ups.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our maternal health fund.
