PROJECT #108
Project #108 | Alleviating the Food Crisis in Southern Africa
Our partnership with World Relief
Many parts of Southern Africa, including Malawi, are currently suffering from a massive food shortage. Nearly two years of severe weather and drought are pushing families in rural areas to the brink of famine. It is estimated that 80% of those affected by the food crisis are farmers. When farmers are unable to grow crops or sell produce in the marketplace, they are unable to feed their children. Nearly 50% of children in this region are severely malnourished.
We partnered with World Relief to ensure that all households in the Salima district of central Malawi have food security. Our partnership provided food rations for families, making sure that the most vulnerable had adequate food for at least 6 months. This project also supported income-generating activities, such as food crop and livestock production, community-based nutrition interventions, bee-keeping, and savings and loans group. As a result, the impacted families in central Malawi were able to plant new crops, see them successfully harvested, refill food storehouses, and help vulnerable children survive and thrive.

People with Increased Food Security
Meet Chimango
Chimango is a village headman in the Ntchisi district of Malawi. At age 29, Chimango, his wife, and three children once faced malnutrition due to food shortages common to their region. With the skills and training provided to them by World Relief, Chimango and his family now not only have enough to eat, but have also provided inspiration to others in their village. Through World Relief and its partner churches, Chimango was provided with three rabbits, vegetable seeds, and training on how to raise the rabbits and tend a successful garden. After the training, Chimango was able to build a rabbit house and a backyard garden, becoming the first family in the village to grow vegetables in their garden. Chimango and his family now enjoy vegetables 3 to 4 times per week. He says that he and his family have had no case of sickness and they are all energetic and healthy.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our global hunger fund.
