PROJECT #104
Project #104 | Increasing Maternal Healthcare in Nepal
Our partnership with One Heart World-Wide
In 2015, Nepal experienced a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that delivered multiple aftershocks and inflicted damage on almost half of the country’s districts. An estimated 126,000 pregnant women have been affected by this tragedy, as a large number of maternal clinics were destroyed or sustained damage from the disaster. This destruction resulted in increased rates of unsafe and unsanitary deliveries, where many women were giving birth on streets because of the lack of access to clinics.
We partnered with One Heart Worldwide to respond to this dire need for improved health facilities and staffing. This specific project was implemented in rural Nepal, some of the least-developed regions with the highest maternal and infant mortality rates. In Sindhupalchok, Nepal, over 75% of the regions maternal clinics were destroyed from the disaster and an additional 15% sustained severe damage. Through training health workers and improving health facilities in Sindupalchok, Tehrathum, and Sankhuwasabha, more mothers now have access to clean, safe deliveries. Nurses received training as Skilled Birthing Attendants (SBA), giving them the expertise and confidence to make critical, life-saving decisions.

Meet Tara
Tara is a skilled birth attendant at the Khalte Health Post Birthing Center. Tara initially completed a course in midwifery just for the sake of getting employment. However, after she started working she soon realized that it was her passion to serve people in need. Tara says, “I was given the opportunity for SBA training through One Heart Worldwide which I think is really helpful for nurses like me who work in such remote villages where essential birthing equipment is not readily available. SBA [training] has increased my knowledge and boosted my confidence too.”
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our maternal health fund.
