PROJECT #96

Project #96 | Community Health Training in Uganda

Our partnership with The Adventure Project

In partnership with The Adventure Project, we came alongside 25 women in Uganda and trained them to become Community Health Promoters (CHPs). These women are now equipped to diagnose and treat preventable illnesses in their communities. These women also are able to earn a living by selling life-saving products at affordable prices. Each woman cares for about 800 people, with a focus on maternal and child health. An MIT study found that these CHP’s are reducing child mortality by over 25% in their communities.

Each $2,000 of this grant trained one woman and provided her with skills, a uniform, and a phone to help her diagnose and follow-up with patients. Not only do these jobs benefit the community and the women themselves, they also enable her to care for her own family and sustainably address extreme global poverty.

Meet Juliet

ODW joined The Adventure Project in Uganda to visit the Community Health Promoters (CHPs) who were trained through our last partnership, along with the mothers these CHPs provide health services for.

One of the mothers we met was Juliet. Juliet’s daughter had became very ill one night with a fever. A neighbor friend told Juliet about the local CHP in their community, a women named Grace. Juliet took her daughter to see Grace, who was able to help. Ever since, Juliet has gone to Grace for health advice on things like anti-natal care, nutrition, and how to prevent and care for basic illnesses. When asked why she appreciates having a CHP around, Juliet explained that it’s simple, “when my children are sick, she can help.” Juliet has noticed that her children have been much healthier ever since Grace came into their lives.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our jobs and skills fund.
