We're joining efforts with The Exodus Road to care for trafficking victims in Thailand. This partnership, which is our 72nd, aims to free 15 victims from the exploitation within the trafficking industry and provide them with intentional aftercare. These individuals will receive basic necessities (food, shelter, transportation), as well as educational, legal, and medical assistance. Through this campaign, we are hoping to raise half of the $23,650 to cover the costs of the rescues and aftercare.
Join us as we help these victims achieve a bright and hopeful future away from the unjust conditions of human trafficking.
The Issue In Thailand
It is estimated that 500,000 people are currently enslaved in Thailand. The Southeast Asian country was ranked as a Tier 3 country in the 2014 Trafficking in Persons Report, with the majority of people being victims of sex trafficking. The government has not complied with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking. They were granted a waiver in both 2012 and 2013 to complete written plans to reach compliance; however, they failed to do so.
ODW + The Exodus Road
Our partnership with The Exodus Road will stage interventions in unjust and exploitative situations, while also providing victims with immediate care. A Multidisciplinary Task Force will be employed on every intervention. Victims will receive basic services, such as transportation, food and shelter. This grant will also cover the costs (legal, educational, medical, etc.) associated with rehabilitating each victim, returning them home and/or helping them reintegrate into society.
Freedom for an individual trapped in modern slavery must include strong aftercare elements— both during and after the traumatic event of an intervention. While finding and freeing victims is significant, caring for them well in their new lives out of slavery is equally as important.
