Water is essential to life.
The majority – if not all – of those who are reading this blog and visiting our website likely has zero concerns about water. We don't have to worry about where to find water or if the water we're drinking is clean. It is something we take for granted.
But did you know that there are still approximately 884 million people in the world that don't have access to clean water?
This is why March 22 is World Water Day. This global observance is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) to remind the world that we must tackle the global water crisis.
Did you know?
- 884 million people lack access to safe water supplies; approximately 1 in 8 people.
- 3.575 million people die each year from water related disease.
- The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives through disease than any war claims though guns.
- Every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease.
- In just one day, more than 200 million hours of women's time is consumed for the most basic of human needs – collecting water for domestic use.

How One Day's Wages is Helping Providing Clean Water
ODW has three initiatives in helping provide clean water:
- Partner Projects
- Grants
- Company Partnerships
ODW has fully funded three partner projects in Liberia, Cambodia, and Ethiopia. Our grant was awarded to a community based organization (CBO) in Kenya.
Liberia:
This is the most recent fully funded project as we've raised our goal of $5000 to build a water well in Liberia with charity:water.
Cambodia:
Together, we recently raised $34,041 in our partnership with a child's right to help bring clean water projects in 7 sites in Cambodia with our parters, a child's right. This will help bring clean water for 13,142 kids and 410 staff! These water filtration systems will be installed by May and our funding takes into account training and monitoring for the next 10 years.
Ethiopia:
Through our community, ODW raised $25,000 to help provide clean sanitation and one water well for an entire primary aged school in Ethiopia. Approximately $20,000 will go towards providing toilets and sinks and $5,000 towards the construction of a water well.
Kenya:
We awarded a grant to Common Ground Project – a community based organization (CBO) in Kitale, Kenya in the amount of $1,629 which helped build a water tank in a primary school that will store over 100,000 liters of water. This will help provide clean water for 370 students in the school and over 2500 villagers that live adjacent to the school.
Company Partnership with MiiR Bottles
ODW is proud to partner with MiiR Bottles as one of our newest company partners. MiiR creates highly functional stainless steel water bottles. And as part of their one4one initiative, MiiR is donating $1 for every water bottle sold to ODW's clean water projects.
