ODW Updates, January 2025

From Executive Director Carissa Youssef

A new year brings a renewed sense of possibility—a chance to refocus and recommit to the mission that unites us. As we embrace 2025, our team is resolved in our efforts to strengthen and support our global partners. We are ready to roll up our sleeves and dive into the meaningful work ahead, together.

At the same time, we acknowledge that this start to the new year already holds hardship for many in our country who have been impacted by wildfires and other severe weather challenges. We see you and hold you in our hearts and prayers as you navigate this difficult time.

We recognize that extreme poverty heightens vulnerabilities, particularly for displaced people and refugees. This month, we’re highlighting how your generosity strengthens refugee resilience through partnerships designed to address the unique needs of those experiencing displacement. We invite you to join us in this impactful work by exploring the ways you can be involved.

We’re so grateful we get to face big goals and sometimes daunting tasks as a community. Thank you for standing with us as we continue to work for a future where every person can thrive.

It’s a privilege to work alongside you.

Partner Spotlight: Partners Relief & Development

One Day’s Wages recently celebrated the conclusion of a partnership with Partners Relief & Development focused on ensuring that displaced and marginalized Rohingya students had the opportunity to receive a high-quality education. Students received books, uniforms, vitamins, and/or hygiene supplies, while teachers received stipends and training opportunities.

Shayhayna,15, is one student whose life was changed by your kind support. Originally from Rakhine State, Myanmar, Shayhayna’s family fled to Bangladesh in 2017 to escape the genocide against the Rohingya. She was only eight at the time and remembers how their lives changed overnight: “We had to leave behind our home, my school, and everything to escape the violence.” Now living in a refugee camp with her family, Shayhayna shares the challenges of displacement and the hope she finds in education: “Life in the camp is hard, especially for girls. It’s overcrowded, and I feel unsafe. But in May 2024, I joined the women’s education center supported by Partners, and it was like a dream come true.”

At the center, Shayhayna is learning to read and write in Burmese and practicing basic math skills. “The teachers are wonderful—they go beyond the curriculum, sharing stories about kindness and the importance of helping others. It’s a place of hope where I can focus on my future and not just survival.” Shayhayna is determined to complete her studies and dreams of continuing her education to make a difference for herself and her community. “Education is a precious gift, and I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity to learn again.”

What a privilege to support young adults like Shayhayna. You can read more about this project here.

Did You Know?

Every day, people are forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict, violence, persecution, and other crises. As of mid-2024, 122.6 million people worldwide have been forcibly displaced from their homes. One Day’s Wages supports projects that build refugee resilience because displacement—caused by conflict, violence, and persecution—brings trauma, instability, and extreme poverty.

Forcibly displaced people consistently experience higher rates of poverty than nationals, with over half living below the poverty line. In addition, a majority of refugees (85%) are hosted in low-income countries.

One Day’s Wages comes alongside community-based partners to provide critically needed food aid and relief supplies, and to facilitate access to educational and income-generating opportunities. Since 2009, we have supported 18 projects in communities experiencing displacement. With your help, our partners have:

* 55,884 refugees and displaced people supported
* 48,476 refugees and displaced people received emergency aid
* 6,478 refugees and displaced people received livelihoods support

We acknowledge with relief the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Palestine, offering a moment of respite for those impacted by violence and displacement. Conflict has forced many families from their homes, deepening hardship and uncertainty. As an organization committed to supporting displaced communities worldwide, we remain hopeful for lasting peace and the restoration of safety and stability for all.

The results are in, and the generosity of Americans in 2024 is truly inspiring! U.S. donors contributed an estimated $3.6 billion on GivingTuesday (that’s ONE day of the year), reflecting a 16% increase from 2023 (or 11.9% adjusted for inflation). Even more exciting, approximately 18.5 million people donated to nonprofits on Giving Tuesday this year. As Asha Curran, CEO of GivingTuesday, put it: “This truly highlights the generosity and collective willingness of Americans to come together. We continue to witness the transformative power of collective action and giving.”

We couldn’t agree more! We’re so proud to see people across the country embrace the opportunity to make a difference and to witness through this community the power of a grassroots movement to create change.

Now that’s good news!!

The first time I attended a savings and loans group meeting was in Uganda. In the still heat of the early afternoon, a dozen of us gathered under the shade of a mango tree. We sat on wooden benches in a circle. In the center was a cash box, carefully unlocked with...
