Project #189 | Urgent Support for Youth and their Families in Rwanda
Our partnership with Hope for Life
One Day’s Wages partnered with Hope for Life to assist families who had lost their source of income as a result of the lockdown. Our partnership supported families with provision of food, housing assistance, and basic medical supplies like soap and masks for three months for a total of 1,325 people. Our partnership enabled youth to safely shelter-in-place without being forced to the streets to seek resources. The ultimate goal is to keep families together and safe inside their homes, thereby reducing the risk for more children experiencing homelessness. Most of the families with whom they worked with are day laborers, typically earning between $2-$5 per day. As a result of the lockdown, their income had completely disappeared leaving them with little to no savings. Most were struggling to feed their families, pay rent, and access basic resources like clean water and soap to stay healthy. All of these families have children who have either previously experienced homelessness and are now reintegrated back home, or who were on the brink of experiencing homelessness before the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

Mugisha graduated high school in 2019, and was able to get his first job immediately following graduation. During this time, he was also able to transition into independent living. Unfortunately, when COVID-19 hit Rwanda, he lost his job which put him at risk for experiencing homelessness during uncertain and unsafe times. Hope for Life stepped in and provided him with rent and food assistance to support him short term. In addition, Hope for Life helped him find another job in the construction industry, ensuring that he will be able to provide for himself long term.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our emergency relief fund.
