Renewing our Commitment to Haiti
As we commemorate the 1st anniversary of the earthquake, please join us in renewing our commitment to the people of Haiti.
Even before the quake, Haiti was one of the poorest countries in the world. About 80% were unemployed and 60% were living in extreme poverty.
And that was before the quake of January 12, 2010.
The quake was devastating. Over 230,000 people were killed and according to some estimates, 1.5 million people were left homeless and displaced.
How We First Responded
Like others around the world, One Day's Wages responded and created a Haiti Relief Fund. People gave, churches gave, schools gave; Birthdays were donated. Folks ran marathons; People hosted benefit shows, dinner parties, and breakdancing competitions...
We've been to Haiti twice since the quake and while it's difficult, challenging, and messy, we've seen with our own eyes the impact of your generosity and creativity. It's not an exaggeration that - in part - because of your generosity and our collaboration with our partners, lives were saved and impacted.
The Impact We Made Together
For example, consider the work we've been a part of through our partnership with World Concern:
- 100,000+ people received disaster assistance
- 7,091 Haitians employed through Cash for Work program
- 1,284 houses have been repaired for Haitian families
- 530 transitional shelters have been constructed
- 989 livelihood grants were given out, getting Haitian business owners back to work
Is the work done? No, far from it. There is progress but there's much more work to be done.
Let's Renew Our Commitment
Our Haiti Relief Fund seeks to raise an additional $100,000 over the next year. $50,000 will be raised to continue our partnership with World Concern and to support their funding proposal. With the additional funds, we'll continue to vet for smaller NGOs and CBOs doing work in Haiti that align with our vision of moving from Relief to Rebuilding/Development.

A Message from the People of Haiti:
During our week here in Haiti, we've been told by so many people:
Please tell your supporters that we thank them. We thank them for helping us...help our families, neighbors, and country. Please tell them, "Thank you."
And so, on their behalf: Thank you.
Join us in renewing our commitment to Haiti. Donate to the Haiti Fund.
